Red Geraniums and Frequently Asked Questions by Virginia Fine Artist Cathyann Burgess

Her Essence Remains: Red Geraniums©2013 C.L.Burgess 10x8 oil on panel

Frequently asked question (FAQ) of this artist when introduced as such:
"Oh, you are an artist? What do you paint? Where do you show?"
Which always leaves me stammering for the"correct" answer. Afterall, this person may be a potential client, not just someone who wants to know me better. Impress.
For those who really know me, a person who is stammering for words, would not be their assessment of me.
Yet, my personable controlled self, the professional me, finds a response, textbook usually, to satisfy the inquiry.

But it is so very hard.

Because the other part of me wants to shout from the mountain top like Maria in the Sound of Music, "I paint what moves me to connect with rest of you, it makes me enormously happy to not talk(!) but to be alive with smell of oil paint, the scratchy sound of the palette knife, animals in my yard, flowers and trees after rain.

But that is not all.

Sometimes, I want to relive moments with people I can no longer be with. Sometimes that might be through a portrait. But other times the richness of spending time painting, comes with memories so vivid I can hear the person or feel the feeling I had at the time.

This painting is one of those special ones for me, as it evokes times spent with my grandmother in her garden. She loved gardening. And geraniums were a special delight for her.

So today, the answer to FAQ

I paint my grandmom.
Today I paint her love.
